Cognitive Development in Early Childhood

Piagetian Approach

Jean  Piaget named early childhood the preoperational stage. The charactristic development in this second major  stage of  cognitive development, which lasts form  approximately ages 2 to 7, is a great  expansion in the use of  symbolic thought, or representational ability which first emerges at the end of sensorimotor stage...

  1. So far, I´ve just read the first link: "How Teachers Can Use Cognitive Theory in the Classroom" and I found interting the fact that as a teacher we have to make students feel that they are important by assigning roles and also i liked that teachers can explain students how things works by discussing in a good environment!
It´s is so nice to see that games still being a tool that help not only teachers to instruct students but also, they help students to acquiere in a easy and fast way more knowledge.

  2. It is important to know how children work and act in order to help them in the developmental processes through giving appropriate tasks that develop specific ability which is wonderful also, we won´t have frustrated children because we as a teachers won´t demand things that they are not ready to do.

  3. Hi teacher!! I think that it's really important to help children in the cognitive developement process and there exist many ways to do it like doing games in the classroom that give them the pattern to analyze and create ideas in order to solve problems.
As teacher, we have a big responsability to help those kids that maybe sometimes don't obtain enough attention from their parents at home and they are in the age in which they need more help! I believe that creating strategies and diverse activities in the class will help to the kid to across the cognitive process.

  5. Hello teacher, I think Jean did a great job in trying to do more research on how they develop the mind of a child. I believe that the activities proposed by the links are very interesting, it is very important for a teacher and also parents to know about these stages so that they can help develop to child because many times when they do not know about it they usually make mistakes about the behavior of a child why he is so.

I want to say something about Why not accept an intelligence child to 5 or 6years.
My neighbor is 17 years and he has 2 years of studying at the university, when he was 6 years, he studied first grade, when he was 7 years passed it on to third grade because he was very intelligent, the problem now, he presented is the way how he relates to others because he says his classmates are older and like other things, so he prefers to be alone.
    What happened in his childhood?
Do you think, teacher though in his future? (Relations to others or ways to thinking)
Believes that he jumped some stage

  6. You are right Tati, Sometimes teachers and parents only think about children as medals. Your neighbor's example is just one of the many we have.

  7. Hi Montserrat.
I was reading your diet for children and I have a comment.
I think that is good, but how a normal family will buy everything that is in your diet. I guess, that we as a futures teacher will think in a diet less expensive than yours because there are families who live with a $ 1 per day or less than a dollar.

  8. I agree with you Yessy, but post your menu please.

  9. Hi teacher Yani

Well, I was thinking in one diet, but it was hard to make one with little money. So, I asked some this question: What do you put in the lunchbox?

    - Monday: French bread fills with beans, a banana and water.

    - Tuesday: two pupusas that cost $0.25, an orange, and juice that is made with freskitoc.

    - Wednesday: French bread fills with cream or casamiento, a fruksi, and a banana.

    - Thursday: fry bananas, a candy and water.

    - Friday: cereal with milk, a small apple, and water.

  10. Hello Teacher!!! I consider is very important for us to learn about cognitive development of children because we,as teachers, can help them in order they can learn more. The activities that we must do, have to be very creative a diverse, so that they will be interesting in participate .As a result we will create an enviroment where children can learn playing.

  12. Yes Yessy, I know what you mean when you refer to the budget, but we have a very serious problem with our society. The thing is that as parents we ignore many things about nutrition, that's why we need to know how to persuade parents to prepare a lemonade (a lemon and some spoons os sugar) instead of getting a frequitop, which is sometimes more expensive...It's a big challenge but we should not assume that things won't change, we should at least try...

  13. Hello, teacher and classmates! Well, after reading the links I have understood better Piaget's developmental theory and I think that it can be really helpful in order to improve and optimize the teaching-learning process in our country.

Many of my classmates have already stated that for chidlren it is easier to learn by doing and creating things by themselves. I believe that we as English teachers have a great opportunity to help children to explore and develop their artistic and creative skills while they are learning English.

Now, I would like to comment Tatiana's post about the disadvantages of acepting a child in school when he or she is too young. Well, I understand that maybe for some children starting school too young might be something really challenging, but I think that in most of the cases the outcome would not be that tragic and bad. For example, my brother and I started school when before 6 years old and we did not have any kind of problem in academic performance or in the process of socializing. Besides, I think that the gap in ages can be overcome and we have to remember that not all people like the same things as you do. For example, Marta is my best friend we are almost the same age, but we do not like the same kind of music, movies and we do not have the same kind of hobbies. However,we are still friends. I would say that Tatiana's neighbor has a problem, that might have been influenced by the gap in age, but that it cannot be totally atributted to that.

  14. I think that it is important to know about cognitive development because it will help us to understand children’s progress in the classroom. Also, it will help us to select the correct syllabus and activities in order to teach children in the best way.

In my opinion, we should learn and manage this information that will facilitate us to comprehend our students because, as we have seen in class, children have to pass by the cognitive, physical and social developments, they develop skills and abilities in similar progression but, not all in the same rate, and also, because we will find in our future classrooms different situations, behaviors and capacities of children, and we as teachers need to comprehend all those things.
